Crime Prevention Advice - Online Dating

The vast majority of people using dating sites are sincere and honest in the information they provide and in their reasons for joining. However, there are exceptions, and you need to be aware of how to keep yourself – and your bank account – protected while meeting people online.

Creating your online dating profile?

Be anonymous:

  • Choose a username that doesn’t let everyone know who you are.
  • Keep contact details private
  • Stop communicating with anyone who attempts to pressure you into providing your personal or financial information.
  • Meeting someone for the first time?

Follow some of these simple steps to keep yourself safe.

  • Wait to meet until you feel comfortable
  • Meet in a public place and stay in public
  • Let a trusted friend or family member know your location
  • Be in control of your own transportation
  • If you feel uncomfortable at any time, it’s okay to leave
  • If something happens, it is not your fault. You deserve to be treated with respect and to date without fear of harassment or violence.

If you are a victim contact police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
